Abstract

"This book contributes in an important way to the psychoanalytic understanding and impact of Assisted Reproductive Technology on a majority of patients who have difficulties starting new families. Recent advances in reproductive technology and the increased use of techniques based upon it have created a need for psychoanalytic thinking and understanding of the psychological implications of Assisted reproductive procedures, in-vitro fertilization and other similar procedures. The recent and rapid advances in medical technologies confront us with a mandate in our clinical work to understand their complex impact on women, men, and children. However, attention to the intra psychic conflicts and traumatic experience of the use of such techniques has not been addressed in psychoanalytic literature. The developmental trauma and intra psychic conflicts of individuals using reproductive technologies are ubiquitous, yet it has been neglected as a topic of special interest in our clinical work. The centerpiece of these collective chapters deal with psychic trauma of infertility, the compulsion to repeat through persistent repeated use of assisted reproductive technology, anxiety about motherhood, and finally the lives of children who are born and do not know from where they came. These poignant topics deal with family complexes and the Oedipal circle, repetition compulsion, trials and failures, anxiety related to motherhood, egg and sperm donors, parental identity formation, infertility, trauma, and discussion of a contemporary film depicting the challenging and newly defined family structure."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

The Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics provides a journal format for the publication of novel cellular, molecular, genetic, and epigenetic findings that advance our understanding of the biology of human gametes and preimplantation embryos. The goal is to optimize and facilitate the translation of discoveries made from human or relevant animal model experimentation to the safe and efficacious practice of human assisted reproductive technologies within a scientifically rigorous and ethically sound set of standards established by the editorial leadership of JARG. The expertise, sensitivity and commitment of the editorial board guides the marriage of contemporary research paradigms with basic science discovery in the form of original papers, minireviews and other special topic opportunities made available to an international audience of reproductive scientists who have a keen interest in the biology of human gametes and embryos. The guiding principles of male and female reproductive health that impact the pre, peri, and post-conceptional viability and developmental capacity of human gametes and preimplantation embryos is emphasized with the vision and purview of human reproductive health in current and future generations of our species.

Abstract

New developments in reproductive technology have made headlines since the birth of the world's first in vitro fertilization baby in 1978. But is embryo experimentation ethically acceptable? What is the moral status of the early human embryo? And how should a democratic society deal with so controversial an issue, where conflicting views are based on differing religious and philosophical positions? These controversial questions are the subject of this book, which, as a current compendium of ideas and arguments on the subject, makes an original contribution of major importance to this debate.

Abstract

"Since the 1978 birth of the first IVF baby, Louise Brown, in England, more than eight million children have been born with the help of assisted reproductive technologies. From the start, they have stirred controversy and raised profound questions: Should there be limits to the lengths to which people can go to make their idea of family a reality? Who should pay for treatment? How can we ensure the ethical use of these technologies? And what can be done to address the racial and economic disparities in access to care that enable some to have children while others go without? In The Pursuit of Parenthood, historian Margaret Marsh and gynecologist Wanda Ronner seek to answer these challenging questions. Bringing their unique expertise in gender history and women's health to the subject, Marsh and Ronner examine the unprecedented means--liberating for some and deeply unsettling for others--by which families can now be created. Beginning with the early efforts to create embryos outside a woman's body and ending with such new developments as mitochondrial replacement techniques and uterus transplants, the authors assess the impact of contemporary reproductive technology in the United States."--

Frankenstein's footsteps

Abstract

The "Frankenstein" story speaks of deep fears of biological science. Tracing the history of the development of biological science and how it has been received over two centuries, this work argues that the Frankenstein story governs much of today's debate about the new age of biotechnology. Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", a tale crafted two centuries ago "to awaken thrilling horror", is a story that speaks to deep fears and desires that lie at the heart of our responses to biological science. Tracing the history of the development of biological science and how it has been received and understood by the public over two centuries, Turney's book argues that the Frankenstein story governs much of today's debate about the onrushing new age of biotechnology. Popular images of biological science have been influenced by Mary Shelley and such literary descendants as H.G. Wells, Jack London, Karel Capek and Aldous Huxley, as well as pulp writers, journalists, essayists, filmmakers and other commentators. This book examines how these images have developed as the growth of experimental methods has created a biology with real power to control and manipulate life. Frankenstein's shadow is long, Turney finds. It has affected the debates over vivisection in Victorian Britain, early 20th-century responses to the widely advertised possibility of laboratory creation of life and controversies about test-tube babies, genetic engineering and cloning. While Frankenstein remains a vehicle for expressing our collective ambivalence about some of the defining technologies of our age, the story may have outlived its usefulness as a frame for interpreting the significance of real, as opposed to fictional, science. Recognizing the need to understand the old stories, Turney calls also for new stories - stories to help with the task of shaping and regulating the unprecedented set of possibilities biological science now offers for fashioning life to suit our own ends.
